Comprehensive Vision and Eye Health Testing

Sight is one of our most important senses. Just like any other aspect of healthcare, routine exams are critical to maintaining health. Whether you need corrective eyewear or not, a yearly eye exam is the key to keeping your vision healthy in years to come. Individuals with eye disease, such as diabetic retinopathy or glaucoma will need eye examinations more frequently (See Eye Disorders).
In a routine exam, refractive disorder, muscle balance, facility and accommodation are all part of a thorough eye exam. The patients eye health will be checked with dilating drops so driving or computer work may be difficult for a few hours following the exam. * The entire eye will be carefully examined for any evidence of early eye disease. If corrective eye wear is needed that will be prescribed at this time as well.
Routine eye exams are especially critical for school age children as vision impairment can have a profound effect on leaning and schoolwork.
As we age, our eyes begin to change and reading fine print may begin to be more challenging. This normal age related condition is called presbyopia. It is very important to keep up those routine eye exams at this age as well, even for people who have never needed glasses. Patients with only an occasional need for reading glasses can be fitted with the new progressive lenses which allow users to see objects both near and far, thereby eliminating the need for frequent removal of the reading glasses. Reading glasses with the correct level of magnification are critical for maintaining your eye health too much magnification is not a good thing and can lead to premature vision decline.
